Wallops is a new (released in 2022!) client for IRC chat. It emphasizes speed and compatibility over features - and does so very successfully. Wallops works well even on a lowly Macintosh Plus - just as it will on a souped-up Power Mac 9600.

The downsides we found during the many many hours of using Wallops 1.1 for chat in IRC and connecting with modern instant messengers through a jabber server is the unability to resize the application's window and to invert the color scheme. Adding these two features would make Wallops near-perfect.

Still, we recommend it as a lightweight IRC-client and prefer it over the classic MacIRC these days. Wallops does the same, but faster and better.

If you need more features, you might want to try Ircle - but for the majority of System 7 users, Wallops 1.1 is the new gold standard in IRC clients. And thanks to its active development status, it ought to get better and better. We're hoping for a release of v1.2 real soon!
