E-mail is dead. At least on System 7 Macs. The old clients can't handle the forced SSL encryption, so forget about it!
Well, there's truth in that. But isn't it a pity? After all, sending and receiving e-mail is something even a 68000 Mac Plus used to be capable of. This is where the Mac Garden e-mail SSL tunnel comes to the rescue. It essentially works as a middle-man that handles the SSL encryption and delivers the e-mail to you.
The Mac Garden SSL tunnel is a project by System 7 Today's co-admin Knezzen. He emphasizes that no e-mail and/or records are read or kept (while technically that would be possible; as for every e-mail provider) with no access for others to the system. Well, we can't vouch for what secret agencies do with your e-mail provider though. Don't like it anyway? Don't use it! :-)
For those of you who want to send a quick e-mail to mom asking if she's fine from your old System 7 machine, this is a way to use your old e-mail apps again. System 7 Today recommends Musashi as a client but you're free to use whatever you prefer. On the low end side we've successfully used POPMail II, and Mail drop.
- After sucessful installation, launch the e-mail client of your choice. Somewhere in it you are to add the connection details for POP3 or IMAP depending on what you prefer and SMTP for outgoing mail.
- Enter mail.macintoshgarden.org for the connection and choose the correct ports depending on the email provider you have. Remember that the server will act as our middle man.
Your username has to be the full username at your provider. Example: cool_joe@gmail.com for a Gmail account.
Currently supported email providers:
- Gmail - Ports: 110 (POP3), 143 (IMAP), 25 (SMTP) - currently not working
- RockingHoster - Ports: 1110 (POP3), 1143 (IMAP), 1025 (SMTP)
- VentraIP Australia - Ports: 2110 (POP3), 2143 (IMAP), 2025 (SMTP)
If you'd like to use the service with your e-mail provider, please let us know in our forums.
