Browser Central | Performance Tips | System 7 browsers A collection of tips for getting the max out of System 7 era browsers. It won't turn them into speed demons, but noticably improve life. 1. Deactivate JavaScriptOne of the easiest ways to make your System 7 Macintosh crash is to open any browser, activate JavaScript (if supported) and browse to a modern website with tons of JavaScript code. Ouch! S7T strongly recommends disabling JavaScript in your browser. You'll be able to browse sites previously unaccessible and in most cases still being able to read the information. 2. Increase cache Many browsers such as iCab allow you to manually set the size of the disk cache in preferences. The cache is used to temporarily save e.g. image files. Unless you're running a 20 year old hard disk, consider increasing the cache by a few MB. Having images saved in cache instead of loading them completly anew each time you visit a website will speed up the process. 3. Deactivate Cascading Style Sheets None of these browsers support CSS well, although some have rudimentary CSS 1.0 or 2.0 support built in. Both versions are heavily outdated and most retro compatible pages written today go for table layouts due to a higher compatibility. Thus, having CSS enabled will often result in slow page load times, and garbled text & graphics. For best performance, disable CSS in each browser. Information will display more quickly and still in a readable fashion. For each CSS-aware browser provided on System 7 Today you will find CSS disabling instructions below. iCab:
