S7T goes Gopher

so you've just plugged that network card into your Mac SE. You even went through the hassle of configuring MacTCP. Only to find out that there aren't any useful web browsers for a Mac with a lowly 68000 CPU.

Enter Gopher. A text-based, simple and easy to understand system that in many ways resembles the free and uncommercialized Web of the 90's. In fact, Gopher even pre-dates the WWW and enjoyed great popularity among university students during the early 90's before the masses discovered the web.

But Gopher never disappeared. Kept alive by enthusiasts, Gopher is making a slow and incremental comeback and becomes sort of a new-old gold standard for retro machines. Whether you own an Apple II, a Commodore Amiga or the aforementioned Mac SE, they all can connect to Gopherspace and use services such as Gopherpedia (Wikipedia), GopherNews or Gopherddit (a Gopher interface to Reddit). And of course hundreds of small private Gopherholes, which is what makes this such a fun experience!

System 7 Today now has it's own Gopherhole. Point a client like TurboGopher (or any browser with a plugin) to gopher://gopher.system7today.com and find most of our content like updates, drivers and our Help-Center over there.

What are you waiting for? See you and your Mac LC on Gopher :-)
